Volunteering opportunities in Iraq – Note: Traveling to Iraq and especially Baghdad is still not completely safe. Iraq still bears the scars of the two Gulf wars and currently, what creates discomfort and disruption is the Iran/Iraq warfare. However, tourism is growing and improving.
In 2021, as reported by Agence France Presse, more than 107 thousand tourists went to Iraq, mainly from France, Turkey, the UK, the US and Norway, compared to 30 thousand in 2020. It’s a great result and a sign of the country’s attractiveness and of a niche of travellers ready to venture to ancient Babylon.
How to use this page.
Click on the announcement you are interested in. Check the date of the publication (some volunteering opportunities in Iraq might be already expired). If the announcement is still valid, look for the Contact Details section at the end of the volunteer project description. There you can find free ways to get in touch with the hosts (website, e-mail, phone numbers, application form). Send the host/organization a message and wait for a reply.
Most of these volunteering opportunities and programs are free (you receive free food and accommodation in exchange for voluntary work). Some volunteer projects in Iran might require volunteers to pay for their own food and stay. Read the announcements carefully before applying.
Visa in Iraq
At the moment, the holders of an ordinary passport can obtain a visa on arrival at the airport (single entry, costs about USD 75,00).
In Iraqi Kurdistan no visa is required for stays of less than 30 days.
It is recommended to always check with the Iraqi Embassy of the country of origin which visa is necessary for the trip.
Due to the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Iraqi government has introduced some risk mitigation measures, especially regarding gatherings and the use of personal protective equipment. Measures may differ slightly in the various governorates, so it is recommended to inquire carefully with the competent authorities of residence.
Travellers entering and leaving Iraqi territory (including Kurdistan) must prove that they are vaccinated, presenting a certificate of vaccination (green pass). Presentation of a negative molecular test (PCR) is not required.
In Iraqi Kurdistan, there are currently no travel restrictions between the different provinces (governorates) of the region.
