Kakayando Organic Farm, established in 2017 by Felix Odumo Akicho in Homa Bay County, Kenya, is a community-based initiative dedicated to promoting sustainable agriculture through permaculture practices. The farm aims to alleviate poverty and enhance food security by providing organic produce to the local Kawiya community and educating residents on resilient farming techniques.

Felix, a permaculture farmer and teacher, founded the farm to address the challenges of changing weather patterns and relative isolation faced by small farmers in the region. He offers permaculture training and engages in outreach to neighboring villages, teaching families how to cultivate healthy food sustainably.

Kakayando Organic Farm welcomes volunteers year-round to assist with various activities, including animal care, building projects, teaching, and gardening. Volunteers are provided with free accommodation and meals, and the farm accommodates different dietary preferences, including vegetarian and vegan options. The experience also offers cultural exchanges, such as traditional dances and village tours, enriching the volunteer experience.

In addition to its agricultural endeavors, the farm supports orphans in the community by providing food and educational opportunities. Fundraising efforts have been initiated to build a permaculture center and toilet facilities to enhance educational outreach and improve sanitation, aiming to benefit over 500 community members.

  1. Hi,
My name is Cynthia, I am looking for a safe space to rest my thoughts and emotions cause I’ve been in a terrible place mentally and emotionally. I am open to volunteering in exchange for food and shelter at your organization in Homabay County. I may not always have the highest energy, but I can promise to bring sincerity, a willingness to learn, and genuine appreciation for quiet and meaningful work.
