How you are expected to contribute: We have 4 different types of days normally and each of which are described below. There may be some odd exceptions where the unexpected type of work may be needed including but not limited to extreme weather, natural disaster, search & rescue, etc.
NORMAL WORKING DAY
We start packing at 8.30 am before which you are required to wake up have your tea/coffee, your breakfast, take down your tent and pack it. At 8.30, you are required to wash plates and cutleries of breakfast, Brush and pick hooves of all 3 horses then saddle them up. One Volunteer will stay with the support vehicle and help packing the equipment into the Van whilst the other will prepare for the dayโs ride. This morning shift will be from 8.30 to 9.30 at which we leave the camp.
The Benefit of Volunteering with us:
During the day, you will first walk alongside horses for 15 to 30 minutes, then re-tighten the saddle before getting on. Our current schedule for riding is 2 hours max on horseback and the rest we walk alongside the horses. Then sometime in the afternoon, we stop for the lunch break usually 1.5 hours to 2.5 hours depending on how good the grass is if the day is hot or rainy. The lunch break is not set to a specific time but how tired the horses and the team are. After the lunch break, we repeat the same as in the morning. Walking alongside the horses, riding them are not considered as part of the Voluntary work.
We usually camp around 1830 where you will work for 30 minutes to unsaddle the horses, set up the tent, and arrange all the equipment in the correct place. After this half-hour set-up, you will have 30 minutes break to set-up your own tent and relax. But, you will have to be back for another hour for the last bit of the job. Cooking dinner, preparing hot water, and cold water, washing up after the dinner.
Day -Off / Resting day:
When the horses are having day-off the Volunteers might have to tend them, this includes a variety of horse care activities, including, daily 1-hour training, grooming and cleaning hooves. Feeding and watching over them when they are grazing. Usually, we take 2 days off and split each day between the core team and the volunteers. This enables us to do shopping, logistics, shower, laundry, sightseeing, getting involved with locals and relaxing.
ODD day:
After a year of travelling on horseback, we decided to add this section โ A day where nothing goes as planned. Please bear in mind that this is an expedition and some days everything goes wrong and you will be requested to help in a variety of ways which the team finds reasonable, which requires flexibility and understanding from your side.
Music festival:
TiE organizes music festivals with traveling bands every 3 months during our 10 leg break. You will be required to do various tasks to run the festival. Security team: Taking care of horses and our equipment. Food and beverage team โ Prepare and serve foods and drinks. Music team: if you are skilled in any instruments or if you are a singer, you can set up and entertain our guests.
Visa / Air transport / other aids:
Volunteers must arrange their own flights and transport to the nearest town where the base camp is.
They must also arrange for their own Visa or other legal permits required by the law of the country they are volunteering in. TiE does not offer any form of financial aid to enable individuals to volunteer with us. TiE will not reimburse any trainings undertook by the volunteers so as to enable them to volunteer with us.
